Many San Jose neighborhoods were built in the 1970s and beginning in the mid 1990s, a rehab boom started in San Jose, with a flood of young professionals who gave the area a serious makeover. Many of the 70s-era ranch and two story homes are now retrofitted with all the modern touches - granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and elegantly groomed landscapes.
A jewel in the midst of San Jose is Epping Forest, the former home of industrialist Alfred I. DuPont. The 58-acre estate is now a private gated community, with million-dollar plus homes and condos, and the Epping Forest Yacht Club. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and has been restored to its original grandeur for the current residents who enjoy tennis, a private marina, and the exquisite club house, which is one of the city's most popular and prestigious venues for weddings and upscale events.
